Electroclash was a really confusing thing…one one end there was the Larry Tee kind, on the other the International Deejay Gigolo kind, and I don’t really think of those things being that similar at all! I definitely never thought of what Output was releasing as Electroclash, but I can’t exactly tell you why. I mostly think of Electroclash as being bad music that I didn’t like, but I loved those Miss Kittin and the Hacker records, and those are Electroclash, right? Right?

Great stuff! Luxx was so fun and soooo loud. I remember running up to the DJ booth to ask Larry Tee what he was playing and it was LCD. A nascent Scissor Sisters performed there as did the woefully under-appreciated Snax (checkout the piano on Massmiliano Pagliara’s ‘Snap Out’ from ‘22). For me this moment was about putting the emphasis back on the dance floor, costumes, make-up, a punk rock vibe. We were tired of dancing facing a DJ with his head down playing electronic music no one knew. It was very queer and feminist too. At the time electronic music culture felt very gatekept by unfriendly dudes and it was refreshing to feel welcome. Don’t forget Le Tigre’s ‘Deceptacon’. “Wanna disco? Wanna see me disco??” It’s a taunt.
